Olympics in London

The Olympics are celebrated as the ultimate festival of sports throughout the globe every four years, with the Summer and Winter games alternating every two years.  This ancient event, which originally occurred from 8th century AD to 5th Century BC, was revived by the likes of Baron Pierre de Coubertin who founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894. And soon thereafter, the Olympic Games were revived in Athens of Greece in 1986.

The Olympics first made its way to the United Kingdom in 1908, as London became the host for the Games of the IV Olympiad, or the 4th Olympic Games held in the Summer.  The 1908 Summer Olympics was originally meant to be have been held in Rome, however due to Mount Vesuvius erupting in 1906, the games were brought to London.

With the White City Stadium, being built at a record space time to facilitate the events, it housed 68,000 visitors to the Olympics. The venue not only housed a pool for swimming and diving, but also was home to wrestling platforms, a gymnastic area, as well as tracks for running, though they were not the standard of 400 meters, but three laps to the mile. With 22 sports over 24 disciplines, with the likes of swimming, diving and water polo contesting under the sport of Aquatics, the 1908 Olympiad saw the participation of 22 National Olympic Committees the world over.  The Games of the IV Olympiad also saw the host country that is Great Britain; bringing in the highest honours to its land.

Subsequently over four decades later, the Olympics returned to the great land of Britain. Originally set to be held in 1944, the event was cancelled due to the onset of World War II, and was held in 1948 shortly after the war ended. The world came together with the participation of 59 nations, with Germany and Japan being omitted in the lists, due to security reasons of the post-war state.  These 14th Olympic Games were held after a 12 hiatus and the expectations were high, and duly much was celebrated with the United States of America, taking the lead in the overall winnings.

With the onset of a new decade, there is much to look forward to in the Olympiad, as the games returns to London in 2012. The Games of the XXX Olympiad which will be held in the capital of the United Kingdom from the 27th of July to the 12th of August and will mark a significant milestone as the first official city to have the honour of being the host of the Olympic Games thrice and setting London in the history books. Many of the existing landmarks are being utilized for the London events. The likes of Wembley Stadium, the O2 Arena, and All English Club court in Wimbledon are some of the key areas where the excitement will occur.
