About Dulwich Picture Gallery

This gallery is located in Dulwich, London and was purpose built as a public art gallery in 1817 by Sir John Soane. The building in itself is famous and is well-known to house European Art.
The design of the gallery was kept simple with a series of inter-linked chambers lit naturally. It has had a gory past after having been damaged in WW2

The collection at Dulwich was initially commissioned from Switzerland by Sir Francis Bourgeois and his business partner and after unsuccessful attempts at selling the collection elsewhere on the continent Bourgeois bequeathed the collection to Dulwich College upon his death.

The gallery has had pictures as famous as Rembrandts and Rubens stolen, in fact Rembrandts small early portrait “Jacob de Gheyn” has been stolen and recovered four times making it the most stolen artwork in the world.

A modern extension and refurbishment of the gallery was carried out in 1999 adding greater facilities and amenities including a café and lecture hall. The gallery now conducts art courses and hosts art forums and exhibitions from around the globe American Artists showcase their work and so do other non-conventional artists. Its main aim is to foster artistic capabilities in youngsters. It is open to the public for viewing from Tuesday to Sunday each week and is at the below address,
